The Clean Marina Program is a result of citizen participation and collaborative efforts with industry and academia. The program began in May 1996 with a series of statewide development workshops over a three and half year period. Marina and boatyard operators, representatives from the Marine Industries Association of Florida, state and local boating organizations, and Florida Sea Grant and International Marina Institute personnel worked together in these workshops reviewing best management practices, developing guidelines for education, technical assistance and criteria for "Clean Marina" and "Clean Boatyard" designations.
The Partnership and the Department serves as an example of active, participatory leadership on environmental quality and resource conservation. Emphasis is on education followed by action steps to put knowledge and information to work. The Department and the marine industry together developed marina environmental measures, boatyard best management practices and clean boating habits for boaters to help keep Florida waters clean.
The Clean Boating Partnership continues to review program policies and results to ensure the most efficient and productive results that ensure business viability and environmental protection with reduced process.

Clean Boating Partnership
The Clean Boating Partnership is an advisory body consisting of marina and boatyard operators along with representatives from the Marine Industries Association of Florida (MIAF) and its local chapters, Florida Sea Grant Program, U. S. Coast Guard Sea Partners Program, International Marina Institute and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The role of the MIAF and marina professionals is to promote the program and facilitate workshops in partnership with other partners and the Department. The partnership of MIAF, Florida Sea Grant, Sea Partners and the DEP districts provides technical assistance, as well as verification reviews upon request by participating facilities. This partnership provides the direction and evaluation of the program as well as promoting the program, and facilitating workshops. The Clean Boating Partnership continues to be available for technical assistance to marina and boatyard operators. "Clean Boating Environment" through a working partnership between industry and government is the mission statement of the Clean Boating Partnership complementing the Department of Environmental Protection mission statement of "More Protection, Less Process." These concise mission statements describe the commitment of the Partnership and the Department to pursue environmental protection through non-regulatory projects and programs using approaches that achieve greater levels of protection with increased citizen participation and reduced levels of process intensive activities. Also inherent in these statements is the recognition that the economic well being of Florida is dependent upon a clean environment for its citizens and its businesses.
