MIAF - Florida Boating Resources - MIAF Positions

The "Boat Florida" license plate was the brain child of many of Florida's non-profit organizations including the Marine Industries Association of Florida.

David Hefflebower of the Harbortown Marinas in Ft. Pierce and Canaveral has generously formed and funded a non-profit Friends of Florida Waterways Corporation to develop and market the plate or "tag".

Currently, Friends of Florida Waterways is conducting the survey of auto and boat owners (click here to take the official survey) at a cost of $25,000.00 to obtain 15,000 people who express an interest in the "Boat Florida" tag. Once those surveys are obtained, a deposit of $60,000.00 will be made to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and a legislative bill establishing the tag and directing use of the funds will be filed in Tallahassee, probably in the 2003 legislature.

The cost of the tag will probably be $17.00 over the cost of your regular tag (like other specialty license plates), money well spent to achieve the goals outlined above. The design of the tag will be posted here when it becomes available. The tag will be available at your local motor vehicle tag office.

Would you like a Boat Florida license plate?

A "Boat Florida" license plate is in the future for your car, truck or boat trailer and will help generate needed funds for recreational boating and manatee avoidance technology in Florida as well as showing that "you would rather be boating".

These funds will be used for:
Boating safety education and promotion
Boating safety research and development
Recreational boating access to the waterways, emphasizing youth and family access, including boat ramps, water oriented camp grounds and parks
Boating environmental safety technology research and development including manatee avoidance technology
