Clean Marina Program

There are nearly 2,000 marinas operating in Florida today and hundreds of thousands of boaters using Florida's waters every day. Boating is a $14 billion water intensive industry that includes boaters, marinas, and boatyards. Clean water is vital to this multi-billion dollar industry. The Clean Marina Program is a partnership of industry and government agencies along with marina owners developed to provide clean facilities to the boating public and maintain and protect Florida's waterways from pollution.

Protection of Florida's waters will be helped through voluntary participation, "pier" pressure, environmentally conscious activities and reinforcement of current regulatory processes. This multi-faceted approach provides opportunities for public and private entities to work together, as well as provide incentives and remove institutional roadblocks resulting in more protection, less process.

A Clean Marina Action Plan (CMAP) is a working document completed by marina owners for self assessing their facility operations. The CMAP is the planning component by which the owners commit themselves to positive corrective action by a date they set. When all program criteria have been achieved, they are designated as a Clean Marina and awarded a plaque and flag to fly over the facility, providing the boating public with a facility they know is environmentally active.

Annual self-assessment provides the marina owner with an opportunity to review, on an annual basis, facility operations to ensure that program policies and criteria are still in place. The assessment also provides a record of any violations that were self-discovered and reported to the Department and what corrective actions were taken to prevent recurrence. This form is kept on file at the marina and may be requested by DEP staff.

There is a direct link to the future of the marina industry and clean water. A clean boating environment is necessary for the well being of your communities.
